ONE-MAN STEEL BAND PLAYER

Desmond Caulder was born in Trinidad & Tobago (where steel drums originated). He played drums from knee-high; and played in top major bands. At 21, he left to work in America for 6 months. He returned to Trinidad and continued playing and competing in top bands, winning several competitions playing for the Guinness Cavaliers Steel Orchestra band. He went to America to work at Expo 74 for 6 months, and November in the same year he and the band were contracted by the Australian Arts Council toured Australia for 3 months.

He then went to Singapore for 3 months, and then toured the major hotels in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Quantan. Desmond returned to Australia for another 6 month’s stint, and then went to New Zealand under contract to Captain Morgan Rum to promote their products for 6 months. Desmond returned to Australia, again contracted by the Queensland Arts Council and toured all over Queensland.

In 1978, Desmond called it quits on traveling and called Australia “home”! He began working in Brisbane in local groups. Desmond played in many of the F.R.E.E.P.S. concerts at the Botanical Gardens in the city. He worked 15 years with a group, the Southeast Renegades in all the major clubs and pubs in Brisbane.
